Hard and heavily chlorinated supply - well water, older housing stock, anywhere the kettle furs up inside a month, anywhere you can smell the chlorine in a hot shower. That is where people describe skin that stops feeling tight and hair that behaves again.

The head itself is ABS, which is what keeps it light enough to hold. The honest weak points on this design are the hose and the plastic mount that cradles the head - if something is going to fail, it is one of those two, and it tends to happen well into the first year rather than in week one.
We would rather say that plainly than have you find it out. Do not hang the head by the hose, and seat it in the bracket rather than dropping it in.
It threads onto a standard shower arm - the same G1/2 fitting nearly every fixed head in a house already uses. Unscrew the old one by hand, wrap the thread, screw this on.

What is actually in the handle
The cartridge is a stack of layered media - KDF, which is a copper and zinc alloy, maifan stone, and beads carrying vitamin C. Water entering the handle passes through the whole stack before it reaches a single nozzle, which is why the column sits in the handle rather than screwing on behind the head - there is no path around it. You can watch the layers working through the window while it runs, and you can see them change colour as they load up, which is the only cartridge gauge you will ever need.
Enough water to rinse in one pass
The most common thing owners actually say about this head has nothing to do with filtration - it is the pressure. The face narrows the flow across a smaller set of nozzles so the water arrives with force rather than volume, which is what clears conditioner in one go instead of three. Eight settings, from a wide rain to a concentrated jet, changed with the collar on the head. If your shower has always been polite rather than useful, this is the part you will notice first.
It comes off the wall, which is half of what you will use it for
A seventy-one inch hose and a bracket that releases with one hand. People buy a handheld for the shower and then use it for everything else: rinsing the tub down properly, washing a dog without flooding the room, getting shampoo off a child without getting it in their eyes, and reaching the bit of the shower wall that never quite comes clean. Four free tests, and you can do all of them tonight. Does your kettle fur up inside a month? Do glasses come out of the dishwasher cloudy? Does soap struggle to lather? Is there a chalky ring where a tap drips?
Any one of those and your supply is hard enough to be worth filtering. Chlorine is a nose test - if you can smell it in a hot shower, you are showering in it. Most people who take those tests find at least two of them true and had no idea.
Go by flow, not by the calendar. When the pressure starts easing off from what it was, the cartridge has loaded up and it is time - it tells you itself, which is more useful than a date on a box.
How long that takes depends on how hard your water is and how much the shower gets used. A household of four on well water will get through them faster than one person on treated mains.
An inline filter sits between the arm and whatever head you already own, so you keep your existing spray. This puts the media inside the handle of the head itself, which means one fitting instead of two joints to leak, and it is the reason the column is visible rather than hidden in a canister.
The trade is that when the head goes, the filter housing goes with it. If you love your current head, buy an inline. If your current head is also the problem, this replaces both.
The opposite, in most houses. The face concentrates the flow across fewer nozzles, so the water arrives with more force than a wide fixed head - increased pressure is the single most common thing owners mention.
The exception is a home that is already running low pressure at the arm. A shower head cannot add water that the pipe is not delivering, and if your supply is genuinely weak this will not fix that.
Then your water was probably never the problem, and that is a real outcome we are not going to hide from you - some people fit this and feel no difference to their skin whatsoever.

Being straight: we are on a soft supply and I cannot tell you the cartridge does anything at all. No change to skin or hair. What I can tell you is the pressure is genuinely better than the head it replaced and the handheld gets used daily, so it stayed on the wall. If you are buying purely for filtration and your water is already fine, save your money.
